How to use Discord on the PS4

Using Discord on the PS4 console is possible but we must perform a few complex steps. This is because Discord is not officially available on the PS4 console, so it will be necessary to have some accessories.

exist Two methods to use Discord on the PS4. Through an audio mixer, which is the most complete way, or simply using an auxiliary cable. The only difference between each method is cost and convenience. Furthermore, it should be noted that for each method it will be necessary to have a PC nearby.

If you don't want to spend money on expensive add-ons, you can use the auxiliary cable method. You just have to connect a 3.5 mm cable (male to male) from your PS4 Control to the Line-In connection of your computer. Then you configure the output and input device from your Discord.

For more details you can view the following youtube tutorial (You can activate the subtitles and translate them in Spanish). There they explain How to use Discord on the PS4 without the need for an audio mixer.

However, in this article we will explain how to do it using an audio mixer, which is the most efficient way to use Discord (and your PC) in conjunction with the PS4's sound system.

In this way you will have, in an optimized and complete way, an audio system that will allow you to play while listening to the game while you chat with your friends.

Maybe using the audio mixer can be a bit complicated for some people. However, this is not the biggest problem, for many people the most difficult thing is to acquire said mixer, since in the market these are around one hundred euros.

If you are going to use this method, it is important to warn you that your PS4 console must be up to date in its most recent version.

Use Discord on PS4 using an Audio Mixer

The complements that we will need for use Discord on the PS4 using an audio mixer will be the following:

  • Audio mixer (We recommend ASTRO Gaming MixAmp Pro TR)
  • USB cable (from MixAmp)
  • 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable (male to male)
  • Headphones with optical cable.

After having all the necessary accessories, the first thing we will do is set up the MixAmp with the PS4.

  • Connect the headphone optical cable between MixAmp and the console.
  • We go to PS4 settings menu. In the "Sound and screen" section, we click on "Audio output settings."
  • Must select the optical cable output. By default, you probably have the HDMI option.

Now, we must configure the MixAmp with our computerThis way the mixer will have both audio systems working.

  • Connect the USB cable between the MixAmp and the computer. Then, activate the MixAmp's “PC Mode” option.
  • On our PC, we open the Discord application and we go to User Settings ”. Then, we click on “Voice and video”.
  • In "Input device", we select the MixAmp option of your headset. And in "Output device" we will leave it as Default.

We are almost ready. You may notice that any other audio on your PC will not be heard. This is because the PS4's optical cable is taking up all the audio, one way to fix it is with a 3.5mm male to male cable.

  • Connect the 3.5mm cable in the speaker input of your PC and in MixAmp. Then, we head back to the Voice and Video Settings in Discord.
  • Now, in "Output device" we will select the option "Realtek Speakers". In some cases it is usually the default option.

And ready! We already have the Discord perfectly configured with the PS4.

How to use Discord on Xbox One

The method we used in the previous section works perfectly with the Xbox console. To do this, you will need to use an audio mixer compatible with the Xbox, it can be the ASTRO Gaming MixAmp Pro TR Xbox version. And the configuration steps with the console are not very different.

Unlike the Playstation console, the Xbox if you have the Discord application officially. But, this only serves to let your contact list know that you are playing in real time. In the event that you want to communicate with them, it will not be possible.

To link Discord on the Xbox we can do it in two ways, connect your Discord account from the application on PC, or connect your Discord account from the console.

Connect your Discord account on Xbox from PC

This process is very simple. We just need to go to the Discord application and enter the User Settings. Then, in the Connections tab we will have all the accounts and integrations available with Discord, we click on the Xbox Live icon and it will take us to the Microsoft Live page.

We enter our Microsoft email and password, and they will ask us for access to our Discord information, we accept and continue. We will be automatically directed to the Discord website and in a few seconds, our Xbox is linked with our Discord account.

As a result of this process, it will let us know if our contacts are playing on the console. We will receive information about what game they are playing or what application they are using.

This method does not work for communicating on Discord using the Xbox. It is just a link that you can do to stay connected to your console in conjunction with the applications you use.

Connect your Discord account on Xbox from the console

To integrate your Discord account to the Xbox One console, we must turn on the console and enter the settings menu. Then, in the account section, we access Accounts of the linked social networks. From this section we can access the option to connect Discord account next to Xbox console.

When the pairing begins, on the Xbox a code will come out that we must execute in the Discord application either through the mobile or the computer. In the Discord, you must go to User Settings, then in Connections and add the connection with the Xbox.

Once you enter the code, your Xbox will be connected with your Discord account. From now on your friends will know what games and applications you are using in real time.

Nintendo Switch and the Discord app

At the moment there is no link between the Nintendo Switch and the Discord app that allows users to communicate with each other while playing games. This has been a problem since the arrival of this console to the market, since the users of the Nintendo Switch are not satisfied with the options that Nintendo offers to communicate in multiplayer.

Secondly, Discord staff has confirmed via Twitter that if they are interested in being part of the Switch console applications. However, this has remained in this social network.

As a reply, Nintendo hasn't shown much interest to include Discord on the platform, and even worse since the company has implemented a voice chat as an alternative to Discord. Therefore, this is an issue that we will continue to see as the companies decide what to do with the community request.
